The origin of Sung Sot is derived from the surprise of a French scientist when he discovered Sung Sot Caves in Halong Bay in 1901. When he slipped through a narrow rock gap from the mouth of the caves to enter, he had to exclaim the name "Grotte de la surprise" (Caves of Astonishment) because of the splendor of this creation-given masterpiece. By 2012, Sung Sot Caves had been rated as one of the top 10 most beautiful caves in the world by the Czech Association of Travel Agents and Brokers.
Not only that Sung Sot Caves are also associated with the legend of Thanh Giong (Saint Giong) - a hero of Vietnam. It is said that when Thanh Giong finished driving the invaders out of the country, he rode a cloud to heaven, and left the sword with the war horse in Sung Sot Caves to suppress the devil (you can see the stalactites look a lot like a horse and a sword). The place where his horse's footprints ran through also turned into a pond in Sung Sot Caves. It can be said that Sung Sot Caves are a sacred vestige of a great battle to protect the Vietnam of Thanh Giong.
